Default Max load XC can haul via hitch ?

What is the maximum (and optimal ideal) weight that a 2001 Volvo XC70 can haul via a large 2-inch hitch? And max tongue weight?

I think the manual states 350# on the tongue and 3,500# total. That’s a lot for a vehicle the size of the XC and I wouldn’t do it without a transmission oil cooler.

I would also use a xw40 oil, as I think the turbo will be cranking up a lot of boost causing higher oil temps. The Xw40 will be better under those circumstances. I prefer an A3/B4 spec oil, as Volvo recommends them for cleaning. Simpler is just choosing a Mercedes 229.5 spec oil, like Mobil 1 0W40.

I have hauled our 26' sailboat and heavily loaded 6x12 U-Haul trailers using our '04 XC-70. Crossed the Rockies several times which is a 600 mile (1,000 kms) shot. The "official" figures used in Canada seem to use European statistics which rely on the Nivomat self-levelling system which is not available here. The good news is that the XC-70 (without Nivomat) can do it, including hauling up long mountain inclines without appreciably slowing down. That said, the 350 lb tongue weight is a fantasy as your rear suspension will be dragging. Figure on 200 lbs as being more reasonable.

We also have a Jeep and the difference in driveability is huge! Basically, the wagon can do it in a pinch (it's still running strong at 400,000 kms), but the drive will be delicate once you exceed about a 2,000 lb railer weight.

Look up the trailer-hauling specs in the Owners Manual.

I looked it up, while looking up something else. Way more restrictive than I remembered.

Max roof load 220 lbs 100 kg
Max trailer weight (w/o brakes) 1100 lbs 500 kg
Max trailer weight (with brakes) 3300 lbs 1500 kg
Max tongue weight * 165 lbs 75 kg

1100 without brakes. 165 on the tongue. A Hobie Cat and not much more.
