My answer could have been yes because one was replaced a few weeks ago under warranty but after leaving the dealer, got on the highway and same missing from engine. came back to dealer and after all, it was only a defective spark plug. They installed 5 new plug and VOILA !

Got to keep the new coil pack ! 121,000Km ( 75,000 miles)

What do you mean "got to keep the new coil pack"? Did they give you the old one or put it back?

I would expect better life but 90K miles is not outrageous for ignition parts to fail.

The coil packs on the XC are at the rear of the engine under the cover; I expect hot temps may build up under there.

Are you in a hot climate, does your driving includes a lot of city / stop and go, or are you often stuck in traffic jams on the highway? All these are factors in high underhood temps.

I suspect this is temperature related, heat is the enemy of all electrical devices.

yes but every part in the engine comparment are suppose to compensate to heat. So, it might be high resistance in the coil pack. The more mileage the car, the more problems will occur. Is the other way around.

Default Coil Pack Failure @ 79k miles

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread. My 01 XC70 experienced a coil pack failure today at 79,000 miles. Check engine light flashed and also had a rotten egg smell. The ambient temperature at the time was -15C and the car had been driven 5 minutes to the local mall and re-started after 10 minutes when the failure occured. My wife drove it home and noted it had no power and the engine was chugging. Called our trusty mechanic (20 years ex-Volvo) and he suspected spark plug or ignition coil. He was dead on. $90 for the part, 0.6 hours labour. Comment from the mechanic is this is not a common failure mode but he added he's seeing more of late (he services a lot of old Volvos).

Not all THAT common but it happens on any car.
GM coil packs are notorious to crap out at any time after 60K miles

I had my first coil pack go the other day at 94K. FCP Groton supplied it very reasonable. I also changed the plugs at the same time. I plan on ordering a spare to carry with me.
