Exclamation 2004 XC70 DIM and radio backlights out

I am stumped. One day everything was OK, the next morning the backlight was out for the bottom row of the DIM, where time/temp/gear, etc are located and the radio display was out as well. When a bright light is shined on the displays, the information is there, just not backlit.

I checked the fuses and cannot find anything out. I ordered a set of bulbs for the DIM from IPD and am waiting for them, but was wondering if there is something else I should look at as well.

    Thanks,
    Greg

I would try bulbs first - they can fail, and you need the bulbs for the LCD screen to work. If not, it's beyond my abilities, because you're into soldering power supplies, etc. In that case, I would call XEMODEX. Expensive but worth it. I've had XEMODEX work over two of three DIMs for the cars in my signature. Seems to happen about 150-180,000 miles...

So...everything I saw online showed bulb holders on the back cover of the DIM for my year and VIN Volvo XC-70. Ordered the correct bulbs from IPD. Today I pulled the DIM and saw a nice, blank white plastic cover on the back side. All the photos online showed light sockets. OK, so I took the back cover off, figuring the sockets are under the cover on mine.

    NOT!

My 2004 XC-70 seems to have a self illuminated display for the the DIM. There are no replaceable lights for the information at all.

Now the question is, can I replace the DIM with one from a junkyard XC-70 or S60 without having to have a dealer use VIDA? This is my only car, so I cannot be without it while sending out DIM for repair.

I think you have something else going on. The odds that your instrument cluster LEDs AND radio bulbs (that model year may be LED as well? No clue) died simultaneously are pretty low, there’s likely a root cause responsible for both.

That said, if you need a working 2004 DIM cluster I actually just swapped out mine yesterday (I got the cool R blue panel now with LED lighting). So I have a fully functional MY 04 cluster you can have if you need it. It’s in a few pieces right now but from your pics you’ve torn down the unit enough that you can simply swap the boards from my housing to your housing.

Let me know if you want me to mail it out. I don’t need it so if you want to just pay for shipping it’s all yours.

I agree, it seemed like something more was going on, but it seemed like the easiest thing to check was bulbs. Luckily, I can return the bulbs to IPD since their site actually said that they fit a 2004 XC-70.

I'd give it a shot. Can you take PayPal or another means? I can PM you with my address.

Exclamation Much deeper electrical issue than lights out

OK, so, today I was driving and noticed that the HID headlights were on during the day. Normally they automatically switch to daytime running lights. The switch was in the auto position. I tried to turn them off, the switch has no effect. The HID headlights stay on all the time.

To recap, here is what is going on:

    * DIM and radio readouts have gone dark. The information is there if I shine a light on the displays.
    * The DIM does not take light bulbs, it has a self illuminating display array.
    * The headlights are on all the time instead of auto switching to daytime running, and the selector switch has no effect.
    * The headlight high/low switch DOES work.
    * All other interior lighting works.

    So...where to check next?

    Later,
    Greg

Since you’ve checked fuses, I would look for a systemic cause: bad alternator, low battery voltage, for example...

I also checked the fuses on the top side of the CEM under the hood. Going to try doing a hard reset by disconnecting the battery and check the connectors under the hood. I can also put a meter on to check voltages.

Your CEM is under the hood?

Mine is under the dash...and has no fuses...so, are you sure you’re checking the CEM?

Because CEM was one of my suspects in your problem,,,

DERRR Yeah, I was looking at the box under the hood.

Is the CEM something that can be replaced with a junkyard part, or does this need programming at a dealer?
