Mobil 1 is a good oil. No worries on its performance.

It's not the best for an extended drain interval, however.

While this is a bit of oversimplification, one could say that the base stock determines performance, the additive package determines life. (the additive package is actually a huge determinant in performance, too). So, you can have a great oil, that starts to sludge up before it gets changed simply because combustion byproducts have exhausted the additive package, and acids in the oil begin sludge formation.

This engine tends to clog up the PCV system, causing all kinds of problems.

The principal reason: USING THE WRONG OIL.

What you really want in this car is an A3/B4 oil. Viscosity is just that - thickness. Oil is far more than simple viscosity.

The other specifications determine suitability for your car. A3/B4 European specification is for extended drain intervals and ensures that the oil won't start sludge formation with an extended drain.

One of the best oils on the market, and at the best price, for your car, proven through oil analysis done on my XC, is the Castrol 0W40, which is an A3/B4.

It's available on Amazon (or at Walmart) for about $22/jug of 5 QTS. An outstanding bargain.

I posted about oil selection on this board many years ago. There were a lot of responses. Read up if you're interested: https://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showt...Oil-Rant/page5

IF not, then simply, buy an oil that meets MB 229.5 or ACEA A3/B4 and you're good for the extended drain.
