    Default Turbo Coolant leak?

    Hello all,

    Background: 2005 XC70, 126K miles.

I've been experience some coolant leakage occasionally. I've replaced my radiator, the hose running out of the radiator (lower right when looking at the care head on), the coolant tank and the lines running out of it. This was all preventative maintenance to correct a much worse leak previously.

After all that, everything seemed to work fine, but *occasionally* I'll have a bit of coolant on the driveway. Upon inspection I can see a bit of coolant on the turbo itself. Not much, but clearly enough to drip over time. It looks like the leak is coming from the coolant line itself feeding into the turbo where the banjo bolts are. This means that I top off the expansion tank about once every two weeks or so. I can go days with no leak at all, but just when I think everything is fine the next morning there will be a small amount on the driveway.

With that out of the way a couple of questions:

    1. If I replace the washers and banjo bolts what are the odds that will stop the leak?
    2. Would it make sense to replace the lines that the banjo bolts connect with? If so, where in the world can I find them? I've searched IPDUSA as well as FCPEuro and I cannot for the life of me find them or the banjo bolts themselves. Anybody have part numbers or links for these?

Did you check the two small turbo coolant hoses? These are difficult to see. You may have to move the upper heat shield.

The coolant hoses are more likely culprits than the banjo washers, which are copper and pretty durable. Still, I would clean it up and then look for the "crust" of leaking coolant to be certain of what needs replacing.

It's tight in there. Not easy to get to. I used Oetiker clamps on mine, but regular screw type hose clamps will work too.

Thank you so much, I had actually bought those right before I posted thinking they were for a different part. I’ll report back when the job is complete with an update. I bought some new copper washers because given the hassle to get in there it made sense to just get it all done in one swoop.

Thanks again guys, I love this car and I never would have bought it without such a robust and helpful community committed to keeping them on the road!

Sorry I haven’t checked back in on this. So I replaced a bunch of parts as preventative maintenance. My dad had the good sense to remind me that I should retighten any hose clamps throughout given I touched just about everything along the way.

Turns out I had a leak from the clamp on the upper coolant hose because it was the ONE clamp I never got around to checking. I tightened that bad boy back up and have been coolant leak free ever since!

Embarrassing, but lesson learned. Always check connections a few days after replacing a part, some things might need a final tightening.

Edit: I totally forgot that I did have a weep of coolant coming from the Banjo bolt on the turbo and I replaced the washers on it. I no longer have an oil pan covered with a mist of coolant, only a light mist of oil down there now.
