    Default Daughter's 2002 XC70 deer strike dash-cam video

Be careful out there, it's deer season...

Two Fridays ago, my daughter had her beloved and well-maintained 2002 Volvo XC70 wagon "Blue" totaled by a high-speed deer strike out on the sage flats south of Salida, CO.

On the upside, it didn't come through the windshield, no one was injured and her boyfriend earned major dad points for his immediate gold-star response.

Yes, everyone but the deer and the vehicle is OK.
I'm sure glad there was no opposing traffic.
The fact the deer was just in front of the reflective sign made it harder to initially discern.

Our term for roadside deer is "Sandbags on stilts". And they are just about that smart, too.

To see how fast it happened, click the picture below for the dash-cam video.

[Caution - not for the sensitive - contains screams, a loud 4-letter utterance, and the tumbling aftermath of a high-energy deer impact]

You may have to enable pop-up windows for flickr.com

    try this... Volvo Deer Strike

or open this in a new window...

WOW! Glad your daughter was OK, her boyfriend did have a great response! That happened so fast.

Ooh that looks terribly familiar. $7k damage to my old Saab 9-5 just like that.

Damage does not look bad, the car was totaled because these Volvos are super-cheap now. I would fix it.

Eh, hit a bear this June, remember that feeling when the bumper is slowly approaching the animal and you are foreseeing the damage.

Ah, the loving boyfriend... Ah the taxidermy insinuations you could have with the young lad. You could have a lot of fun leading up to the holidays.

Deer have to be one, if not the, most dumb & worthless animal on the planet. Glad your daughter, or her bo, weren't hurt. Sorry about the XC. Might look worse than it is... And as mentioned they're plentiful in salvage yards. We have an 01 same color as yours and I've seen at least 3, same color, in the yards around us. Might consider trying to save the old gal?

You can't tell how bad the damage is from the bumper photo. I've seen much milder collisions than that cost >$2,000. My guess is this is a $5k+ repair and not worth it on this car. At least that's what the adjuster is going to say. Looks like new hood, radiator, intercooler & condensor, bumper, cowl, fan & grill. With scrap parts maybe you could do it with the insurance payout.

But most important, everybody is safe. Volvo for Life!

That's got to be one of the "most dumb & worthless" comments I've ever read on this site.

Spoken like a city dweller who's yet to have a car totaled by a deer.

Lose a few cars in a collision with them, you'll change your opinion on that particular animal.

    Deer total cars.

Moose total cars and kill the people inside.

    Watch out for Moose!
