Default Can I Switch An ECM?

Can an ECM be switched from one XC to another?
Both are 2001, one is a XC70 while the other is a V70XC.

This device is not a plug-n-play, is it? Since it is a brain in the car, it hold the vehicle's profile, right?

The V70XC has an issue I would like to eliminate its ECM as a possible culprit, so am thinking if I can switch the ECMs just to test the V70.

    Thanks
