Yes, I could only smell it under the load, like climbing up the hill or hard acceleration.
It took me a while to replace the gaskets, but I was doing a new turbo, downpipe and replacing a leaking rear main seal along the way.
Angle gear and turbo have to come off before you have access to all the nuts. Depending on you luck, one or more studs can break off. I don't think it's possible to drill them out with the engine sitting in the engine bay, so take care not to break them =) Sprayed everything with PB Blaster and left it soaking overnight, none broke, but I used a new studs and nuts just to play safe.
I had to drop off angle gear one more time and redo the turbo oil return line: I screwed up a new seal that goes into the block the first time.
Thank you! That sounds like it since it only smell when going up a long hill with high gear.
I don't think I would like to try replacing it, but will ask my reasonable Volvo mech.
Thanks again vtl and everyone.
Exhaust gasket replacement will be many hundreds. It’s several hours of labor.
