Default Exhaust smell from motor under stress

Hi all, thank you for your help as always.

    2006 XC70 almost 200K miles.
    1) Oil breeding system is done (area under injection)
    2) New timing belt, cam seals, and water-pump
    3) No leak from the muffler

When going up a long hill with higher gear (engine under stress), I smell like exhaust of some sort. It's been this way for a long time, however it smell like burning plastic or something now (from a 6 hours (each) trip this weekend).

As I mentioned, it's been this way since we bought a car, so I haven't been concerned. But this plastic burning smell (very small) is new...
Would you give me any suggestions?

The next time you get the burning smell, pull over, open the hood, stick your head in there and see if you can locate the area where that smell is coming from? I was thinking maybe your PCV system is starting to clog up but if you've replaced it recently...

Was the oil passage in the crankcase clear when the PCV system was done?, if it is plugged the PCV system will still not operate correctly.

I would do a thorough inspection of the underside, inspecting the exhaust system. Look for any wire harness that has come loose and can contact a hot surface.

    Thank you all.

    Hi Xfingers,
It's done by reliable Volvo mechanic. I will try to locate the source, but mostly it happens a long hill on the highway. I drove 2 hors each way today, but no smell...

    Hi AKAMick,
Yes it's done withing a year. The mechanic said that he didn't have to clean the oil pan.

    Hi pbierre,
I will try to stop if it's not on the highway...

You'll have to jack up the car to see the exhaust piping. Do it in a safe place. Or take it to a shop with a lift.

    Thank you pbierre,
I was at the very reliable muffler shop. They replaced the muffler not too long ago. They checked everything else and was good...

Maybe I should say it's like exhaust smell (only happens on the hill...)

Thank you juanpen. Yes I replaced it within a year.

I just don't understand that it only happens at a long hill on the highway. So...I haven't had the problem since I'm only driving around the town.

    Any other suggestions???

    Thank you!

I bet for the exhaust manifold gaskets. Seen exactly same picture on two 200+k engines, even 4th cylinder gasket cracks were matching:

You clearly see where the gases escapes.
