18T turbo in a 2002 V70 X/C?

Can I fit an 18T turbo on my 2002 V70 X/C? If no, does anyone know what largest turbo I can fit on without MAJOR modifications. I am trying to keep it as stock as possible, but I am an accomplished fabricator and can make modifications if necessary. Ultimate plan is a port matched motor, connecting rods, exhaust, turbo, injectors and chip....

I learned after spending $$$$$ on a biturbo Maserati (many, many years ago) attempting to make it a fast/good handling car that if you want a fast car - buy a fast car, don't try to make a fast car out of something that can't handle (safely) the additional power. (and you will never get your $$$$$ back out of)

If you want - just buy a 2004-07 V70R/S60R and modify that - At least it has the brakes/tires/wheels/trans cooler/larger intercooler/manual trans option and suspension to support 300+ HP. The manual trans V70R is a pretty cool drive, (for a Volvo) even stock.

Don't know if you are aware that the ECU in a Volvo (with auto trans) limits the power (reducing the torque) in lower gears to avoid frying the transmission. The manual trans V70R ECU does not limit torque.

The manual trans V70R and V70T5 are about 1.5 seconds faster 0-60 than their automatic siblings.

If you want performance and AWD, I would hold out for an R model.

You’ll need a good tune, along with the R model manifold, bigger turbo, down pipe and cat back just to get R performance.

And all that will cost you more than just buying the R, which commands quite a premium these days...

And you can get that much power from a 2009-2015.5 xc70 t6 with a polestar tune from the factory. (325 hp)

Let me add that your 2002 has the smaller turbo, slightly less displacement, VVT on the exhaust only when compared with the R model, which has VVT on both. I love my XC, don't get me wrong, but it's not the platform that I would choose for a performance build.

Depends what you would want it to do, though. If you're looking for an inexpensive, fun wagon, get a 2005-07 T5 and put in a tune. It's several hundred pounds lighter, comes with bigger brakes, lower suspension, better roll bars, dual VVT and a higher boost pressure from the factory. If you could find a 2001-2002 T5 with a manual, that would be great. I looked for one, that wasn't beat up, for a long time. Never found it...

If you're looking for an AWD capable of mild off road, then build up your XC. It's got a soft suspension, though, so it's never going to be a canyon-carver. You can beef up the trans with a cooler and filter, and give the engine a bump with a tune, all for under $1,000 and it'll be much quicker than stock, but still won't catch a stock R, or a stock T5.

You would also want to baseline the car before going for a tune, etc. Timing belt & tensioner, new plugs, professionally clean injectors, all new filters and fluids. Check engine and transmission mounts for wear and replace if needed (almost certainly needed, they don't last long). Check suspension and replace worn parts, including lower control arms/bushings, strut mounts and spring seats, and perhaps struts and shocks. Further, how is the transmission? Rebuilt? Valve body done? 2002 was a notorious year for failed transmissions due to worn valve bodies.

No point in putting extra power on a worn transmission...

Finally, you might consider re-sealing and modifying your angle gear and replacing the collar sleeve - that addresses a couple of known weak points.

Thanks one and all; sounds like what I tell people. Guess the X/C will remain stage 0. I got the car after putting new erything on it and not getting paid- nice car. I have a couple of V70 2.4T's but it looks like an R model or a ride on one of my big motorcycles.
