I'm trying to find instructions for the replacement of the grille on my XC70, and this graveyard thread is about the only thing I could come up with and I can't make any sense of it. The links appear to be dead, and the descriptions of the process are far from clear.

The bumper will be coming off for a small dent repair on the RF fender. (Thanks to people who don't use their mirrors when backing up) So that means I could have the body shop do it, or I could bring the bumper back home and do it here while the painting work is getting done. But if it's something that could be done while the bumper is still on, I might just do it before I bring the car in for repair.

So I guess the question is: Can the 6 clips holding the grille on, be released from the front side of the bumper?

As I look at the XC in the driveway, I don't see how you could get those clips off with the bumper in place...

That said, I can remove and install the bumper in about 20 minutes, now that I've done it a few times. It's really quite easy...

Pop the 5 clips along the radiator support by pushing in on the center. Only push them in about 1/4". Pop the two bottom clips on the cover, where it connects to the splash guard. Same kind of clips, push in the center. Remove the two side splash guards, a T25 torx, I think.

Lift the cap on the headlight wiper arms, remove the 8mm bolt and remove the arms. Remove the front plugs (two very subtle squares about 1x1.5") and remove the 14mm bolts beneath them. Find the T25 torx screws in the wheel well, loosen them about 10 turns, but don't remove them, no need.

Now, push the entire bumper cover forward just a bit. It'll slide forward in the channels on the side bracket and after it moves an inch or so, you'll be able to flex the rear sides of bumper away from the brackets (and see why you needed to undo those two T25 screws) and continue working it off.

Google some directions, and see if I missed anything, but it's pretty easy. Installation is the reverse, making certain that the tabs on the inside of the cover end up in the grooves on the side bracket.

I remember that removing and replacing the bumper wasn't difficult, but since it's a big piece,
(replacing) it would have been more comfortable with the help of an assistant.

Thanks for chiming in guys. I didn't really think it could be done from outside, but some previous information I read caused me to think it might be possible to release the clips from outside using trim tools. Anyway, it's not a problem. The bumper comes off next week anyway, so I'll just either bring it home from the body shop, or have them do it there.

Remove 6 clips on top of the bumper, bend it towards you with one hand. You can now reach 4 upper plastic clips with your spare hand.
