I found what I think is a GREAT deal on a Stockholm hotel.  The Quality Hotel Prince Phillip.  Its outside of Stockholm about 8 miles but is at a metro stop.  It has a special for 690sek per night for a double.  If you book  Fri, Sat & Sun nights you pay for two nights and get the third one free!  So for 1380 sek you get three nights, breakfasts and free parking is included.  Hotel pictures look fine so wish us luck.  We will be staying there May 23-26th.  If anyone wants their email, email me.

That IS an awfully GOOD price -- well done and good luck on your FDC visit and car trek.

Just an FYI- its a bit funky of a place.  Not re-freshed in along time.  Hotels that are ultra cheap are usually that way for a reason in Stockholm.  I'm not saying it is a dump, but its worth about 690SEK.  Free parking is a good thing though.

Also try a couple places like:

    The Dimplomat
    Birger Jarl

They tend to be a little cheaper, but are definatley a class higher in service and location.... location is everything in Stockholm... you can walk everywhere if you pay for town.  If your more interested in driving around the suburbs, then stay outside.

The location of the Diplomat is to kill for if your planning on walking a lot.  There are plenty of remodelled rooms.  I did not stay there but plan to do so on my next visit.

Alternately, a plug for where I stayed....check the rates for the Radisson SAS Viking downtown.  The parking ain't cheap, but the rooms are excellent and the price is heavily discounted on the weekends and in summer.  Book the internet web special- its less than half of the regular rate.  Excellent services and breakfast.  You can eat enough in the morning to not eat again until dinner.  It put the Goteborg breakfast buffet to shame.  If your a gold club member- ask for a club room.  There will be some snacks and drink coupons included- neither of which are cheap in Sweden.  I stayed there because of the rate- it was within $10 of the Dimplomat.  late May will be a different story as EVERYTHING is cheap then.

Anyone know anything about the Radisson SAS Grand Hotel?  Supposedly it is 5 star and hotels.com has it for $99/night in late May.  It's about 10km outside of downtown on the coast.  It was quite a bit cheaper than the lowest rate I saw for the Radisson SAS Viking although I don't believe that includes breakfast.

Also, how much is the hotel tax in Sweden?

    Thanks,
    Jon

The Grand is a beautiful hotel...  parking is free.  Its a bit of a stretch outside of town- and you will need to pay park in the city... there is not much transport out in that area.  Look at the Radisson site itself... the tax and breakfast are included on their special rates.... the Grand is usually $10-20 a night cheaper than the Viking.  It depends on what you plan to do- if you are on a whirlwind trip to Stockholm, stay in the center of town.  If you want a more leisurely trip, stay outside the city a bit...  I opted for the former when I realized that a couple hours would be eaten up a day parking and driving in/out.

NOTE:  Stockholm cards (the real one, not the hotel one) INCLUDE street parking within the city center.  Surprisingly, not really that hard to find.... and patrolled regularly.  I parked at the foot of the Palance in Gamla Stan 10 minutes before the sights opened... there were 5 spaces left in a row of 25.
