Default XC60 Key locked in socket. Will not release or start the engine.

    Hi all,

2009 XC60. A message showed very briefly reporting "Alarm system failure Service required".
The key fob is retained in the key socket and will not release.
    Battery shows 12.6V.
    All electrical systems off.
    Hazard lights will not work.
    No electrical systems functional.
Spare Key does not operate the door locks or windows.

Now complete inactivity from the whole electrical system.

Any advice to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
With thanks and regards to all.

Start simple. Remove battery terminals, clean posts, clean inside the terminals and then re-install both terminals to see if that is it.

Had a similar issue on Wednesday - except I have keyless drive and the messages were Key not Recognized and Brake Failure ...

Complete internal failure of the battery - replacement battery cured all problems.
