I don't buy used or rebuilt alternators.

I take the alternator off the car, and down to the local electric shop, who will replace everything for $105. Cash.

Then, I am certain that the part fits, and has been tested, and will work.

Same day service. Drop it off in the morning.

A used part is a pig in a poke. It may be fine. It may be already dead, and then you're troubleshooting, getting frustrated, and replacing it under a used warranty.

    It's working now!

Stupid mistake on my part... when connecting the positive wire to the alternator I missed the bolt with the loop and the nut jammed it down between the plastic so there was no connection... not even sure how I did that!

Anyways, turns out that the 04 S60 alternator is compatible afterall. No errors and charging strong.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their advice.
