Default Pls help going nowhere with this alarm module

    Hi All,

    2005 XC70

The Alarm system service required message at startup without fail. The sunroof works.. everything works, but the car battery is being drained. I let it sit for a week and last night it was completely dead and needed a jump.

All I want to do is disconnect the alarm. I don't even want it, I just want it to stop draining the car battery. Every post I've scoured on the web is indecisive about whether or not you can just remove it, or keep it connected but cut the interior wires... or if you need a functional module.

Does anyone know if removing it/ unplugging it will help?

    Thanks

Don't know if it will help, and you'll still have the warning unless you get the dealer to remove the software, but it isn't difficult to remove and it wont cause any issue once removed. I suggest you remove it by accessing the module through the passengers side headlight light, you'll need to remove the bumper.

Don't cut wires...if those posters are wrong, and they often are, then you're setting yourself up for more headaches.

The alarm is more than just the siren module, but it's likely the module that's draining your battery. Search the posts here on how to remove it and just unplug it and remove it. Then see if your battery dies...I suspect that will fix it. You'll still have the alarm service message, but at least your battery won't go dead trying to keep a charge on a siren module battery.

If you're lucky, you can solder in a new battery in the module. Mine was completely fried and took the circuit board with it. I replaced the module. Back then, it was about $180. Message resolved, alarm still works, no issues.

I removed the right front wheel and went in through the fender liner. You'll need a dremel for the tamper-proof bolts and a pop rivet gun to reinstall the fender liner.

You may take a look at his topic, scroll down until it's about the siren module (one of many)

Cutting wires is indeed a bad idea.
If you cut a CAN-bus wire, who knows what will happen (or won't happen anymore)!

Don't go through the fender as suggested by official Volvo instruction - removing bumper and headlight is waaay easier.

Thank you all for the replies! I watched enough videos of removing the wheel and well to do that. But, I have heard that going through the bumper headlight is easier. I was only able to find 1 video though and it is pretty bad.

I can just unplug the module for now and remove it.... is this the consensus? Take it apart and go from there....

Yes, perhaps remove the fuse. Also seal the plug since there is CAN-bus wiring.

    Seal with silicon good enough?

Also, does anyone have video links or step by steps for removing the bumper headlight?

    Thanks again

    Check this thread: http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...s-lower-screws
Links for step-by-step instructions to remove headlight are in Post #4.

I unplugged and removed my alarm module last week, wrapped the socket in plastic, and pulled the 5 amp fuse from pass compartment fuse box (28 or 38?). I'm using a multimeter to see if this is causing drain on my battery. Car is not a daily driver, gets about 3000 mi. annual. In the last 12 hours, battery voltage went from 12.16 to 12.07. After a short trip, batt is usually around 12.2+. I don't believe this drain is significant enough to cause starting issues but if the car was to sit for a week, I dunno...

Although it is perfectly doable to remove the bumper and the headlight, I think
it is not the best route to the alarm module. Through the wheel well is easier.
Removing the bumper alone can be done, replacing it alone is less easy.
I put the plug in a small plastic bag, used several straps to seal it off and
then made sure the bag was upside down. My alarm module was half full of
water, so under certain conditions there can be water in there.
