Default Oil weight for a cross country trip?

My kid is taking his 2002 xc70 from NY to LA next week. I have boxes of 10-30 Mobil One. Given that he will be driving cross country, through mountains and dessert, is 10-30w OK? The car was raised on Mobil One.

    10W30 Mobil 1 is fine.

I would ask him to check the oil level periodically in case it uses some on the long trip, and top-up as required.

I think I would worry more about the ATX oil than the engine.

I'd go 5w-40 or 0w-40 for a little extra protection.
    Mobil 0w-40 or Castrol 0w-40.
