Default puzzled by this drive-train noise ...

    Hello all,

My XC70 just started to make a noise like this when making turns: https://youtu.be/NKNn_-1nLEs. It happens on both left and right turns going forward or backward. I couldn't tell which side it comes from when I walk along with the car. When the car goes straight it would also make the same noise but with a much longer interval in between. I got under the car and see no leak from the boots - they look perfect. The noise doesn't really sound the same from a typical bad outer CV joint, so I'm really puzzled. Any idea what can cause such symptom? Thanks!

Thanks guys. The noise heard in the video happens when the car is turning. It would stop when going straight. When going straight the same sound may come back just once after a long stretch (hundreds of feet). So whatever is broken reacts to the turn almost exclusively. Would bear gear or ujoint do that if they are broken? Thanks!

    8pack,

I got the 4 corners of the car on stands and found the awd is not working. I think I'm going to do the bevel gear mod you invented So I guess I have to remove the prop shaft first (I already got the half shaft out on the passenger side). Those allen head screws in the front are not easy to get to, any tips on getting them off?

Take some time, do it slowly
Spray with some PB Blaster and let it soak in first

I now have a reasonable access to the allen head screws after removing a front member from where the catalyst hangs. Not sure how to put a counterhold while removing the screws. VIDA shows a special counterhold tool (9995743) that costs about $60. Anyone managed to get these screws out without buying this tool?

OK. I got the allen head screws out. I also removed the two screws from the center. Now, how do I get it out? Do I pull it out from the rear or just drop it to the floor? Thanks!

UPDADE: I made the car into FWD. From what I can see the sleeve is not stripped, but the angle gear side is worn. So, it seems to me the material for the sleeve is harder than earlier cars, causing the worn on the angle gear side. So replacing the sleeve is no longer an option.
