Default I remember when everyone talked about how cool these cars are

I just checked-in to see what's happening at this site. The whole summary page was just treads about problems. I guess that happens as the cars age, function overtakes emotion.

We bought our 2004 in 2003, it now has 144K miles. I have no intentions of replacing it "just for fun". My wife has a 15 Infiniti QX60 and we have a 16 F150 Platinum, so we do some funsy purchases. But I think I will keep this car for the long haul. It always has the back seat down, ready for anything, like hauling bikes or overloads of Costco stuff. I wish it had adaptive cruise control and some stuff like that the new vehicles have, but I'm happy.
'04 XC70, Ice White, Taupe. Original owner (196K miles as of may21). 6 wheel bearings, broken ignition switch, broken turbo downtube flange, failed throttle body, many warped rotors, and a myriad of weird crap. Still my favorite car ever.

I love my XC and it is really cool With over 350k on it now it has been quite good. I have always been impressed by the utility, comfort and awd on the XC. Reliability has been pretty decent as well. The entire time i Have owned the car I have replaced one hose on the PCV system, suspension overhaul at 273k, drivers side axle at 330k; coils at 200k Haldex pump at 220k(smashed hole in it offroading...) and radiator at 310k. As well as basic maintenance items like brakes and fluids.

Considering I have this car lifted with BadSwedes 2" lift kit for the past 190k, as well as Hilton Tuning stage 1 for the last 100k; I also do some fairly serious offroading in the XC and often use all the power it has, this car has stood up very well!

At over 100k miles, it seems we are getting quite a few 2nd/3rd owners. The typical ~100k European maintenance needs are either a bit of work for DIYers or rather expensive for non DIYers.

Personally, love the Volvo's looks and features and would have stayed if they kept up on the gas mileage race. The I6 engine might have delayed their I4/I3 turbo efforts. Partial or full electric drive train adds a whole new layer of development complexity and is challenging for smaller manufacturers. I recently studied my Prius's hybrid hydraulic brake system. Talk about complex! haha.

Thought about how to apply the newer higher gas mileage technology to these P2 Volvos. But the only reasonably option is ECU remap for slightly higher AFR (air fuel mixture) ratio during low loads. It turns out leaner AFR actually makes more power. But the downside is worse emissions (higher NOx) and engine stress. I would guess those with higher AFR ECU remaps are probably getting +1-2 mpg overall?

BTW, the new F150 is quite an amazing machine. Dropped 750 lbs by going to Aluminum along with turbo charging the 6 cyl engine for city MPG. 2017s are getting 10 speed autos so highway MPG should improve significantly.

I am one who is replacing my volvo, my 01 blew a cam seal and I was wiling to replace it and a TB, and WP for 1300, that seemed fine, after having work done indie says engine is shot so I am looking at about 4 to 5K to get a used engine have it put in and the old repair, for a car w 183,000 that is not worth it to me so it is time to let someone else take it as a project or send it to the scrap yard, I have owned it 7 years and put a good amount of cash in it, the first owners always used a dealer and put a ton of cash in it, new tranny, new cat, ... this is my 2 xc wagon and I would buy another , i know you have to put money into them but they are worth it, but some of these cars are now 15 plus years old they will be dumped when a major repair hits them.

My 1999 XC70 @ 170K miles has gone to my granddaughter. Fuel tank sensor inoperable.
    My wife's 2011 XC70 @ 32K miles just rolls along.
On the other hand my much loved 2003 XC70 at 130K miles has fallen apart!
The AWD mechanicals were replaced at 85K miles under a Volvo Extended Warrenty, my cost for warranty and $500 deductible was $2500. Cheap!
The Instrument panel is dead, dead.
Alarm system is deactivated by pulling fuse, so no sunroof.
Noise under front end and now a hard knocking sound from front suspension.
Car is parked awaiting my decision.
I on the other hand have a 2017 AWD Porsche C4S and plan on having a winter wheel/tire package and drive it until 4" of snow.
Test drove a new XC90 but after purchasing 4 Volvo's and three from this Dealership, only could get Loyalty discount.
Coupled with new model problems from Volvo, I was at least 2 years away from an AWD wagon of any kind as a replacement.
Porsche has over 4K miles and some very hard with zero defects, problems whatever.
Just a spectacular piece of engineering and machinery.
Only thing it lacks is lane following.
with the reports on the new XC90 problems, may not be any new Volvo's for me.
An AWD Panamera wagon with air suspension will be a consideration.-Richard

206,xxx miles on the XC. It runs perfectly. No clunks, no weird noises, no defects or inoperable systems.

I've done the suspension, valve body, and other repairs as needed. Kept up on regular maintenance: fluids, plugs, filters, tires, belts.

It's about to get new front brakes - the Akebono pads on Brembo rotors lasted about 100,000 miles. I'm upgrading the rotors to 12" drilled, with Akebono pads, to get a bit more braking performance. Good parts, well worth it.

After all, I plan to keep the car for another 100,000 miles.

    It's still cool.

Gibbons is right on the money. I've been here since February of 2003 and I often notice how the tone and content has changed - back then everyone was trying to figure out how these things worked - working with dealers, etc. Now it's all about keeping them running. My '04 is at 215,000 and has a long list of ailments - at this point only the 'must haves' are repaired - looking to replace it soon. It had a good run, though - the first 170,000 miles were great. The last 45,000 have been a struggle.

I have to say, I've been driving a 2015.5 XC70 T6 Polestar for the past 2-3 days and the difference between that and our P2s is amazing.
It's thoroughly modern and compared to it, our P2s feel like a bucket of bolts!

We have taken a serious look at the new XC90 recently, mostly because I mentioned to my wife
that a new one is out. She already liked the XC90 when we test drove it in 2003, but I preferred
the XC70 since I didn't feel the 90 to drive better than the 70, rather the contrary.
Our XC70 hasn't even 50Kmiles, so it wouldn't be quite smart to buy a XC90 instead, it is also a
completely new car with a lot of novel features and I do read about a lot of problems (mostly
software related, but since it's the software that controls this computer on wheels, software
problems can't be neglected when contemplating to buy such a car).
I also still like the XC70 as I did the first day. So I will do my best to stay sensible and wait at least
another MY before seriously thinking about spending an aweful lot of money on the new XC90

Absolutely wait since you're not in any rush but it's been out for about a year now and has already had several major software updates
    Wait for the new V90CC
