8pack - go to eBay and get yourself a VIDA/DICE setup. Best thing you could ever do for owning an older Volvo. And besides, you're a wrench head (considering the amount of work you've done on your Z28).

Taking the timing cover off and on is like taking out the oil cap and putting it back in...shouldn't throw codes.

Thanks, have a lot of time into that car but it has been fun. the Volvo is a bit more of a necessity. the things that have been going wrong have either been to easy/small to pay someone else to do, or big enough that they are not worth paying someone else to do given the current value of the car. Quite the conundrum! I figure this stuff all out trial and error and by asking questions, same on NastyZ28. try and give it back when I learn from it.

So, another question, how do you determine which of those setups on ebay is a quality product. I suspect they are not all the same or include all features.

    Thanks in advance!

Preferably one with a Teleca board and with the latest VIDA. If your system doesn't meet the requirements of the latest VIDA than you can download an earlier version. My ancient laptop is currently running VIDA2010D and it works perfectly.

Starting to wonder if the carb cleaner killed your solenoids... Is there an o-ring or seal in there that swelled when the carb cleaner solvents hit it? That would prevent the solenoid from operating...which prevents oil flow and phaser rotation...

    Which would throw a code.

No idea, but good thinking. I am considering just buying one replacement solenoid and seeing if that removes the code. Expensive test at $150 with tax and shipping plus more for a new gasket. Hate to throw parts at it.

Re the VIDA, they all say windows 7 and ie 8 only. I have a windows 10 machine so it looks like it won't work unless someone has experience otherwise.

Could get a used one. These solenoids do not have a high failure rate.

As for VIDA, you can run a vitural machine with win 7 or 8 on it, or buy the DiCE and buy a $100 junker laptop with win XP, edit the registry from XP home to XP professional, and download VIDA2010. This way you have a dedicated VIDA laptop. I always make sure mine is packed on long trips, it has proven handy

Not science, but I was even harsher on mine (4x...ie 2 cars) with brake cleaner. Maybe they will still fail, I got lucky, or something???, but we are now 1,500 miles or so after the gasket change & cleaning on both cars with no codes.

Brake cleaner is designed to be used on brakes, which have rubber components.

Carb cleaner has different solvents, and it may not be safe for rubber.

So, depending on the materials involved, carb cleaner might be damaging where brake cleaner might not...

Tried that yesterday. Eerie doesn't sell them used.....Don't have a lot of junkyards near me. Good suggestion though!

But you did throw a code initially

Did you throw both P0016 and P0017?
