    My diagnostics so far:

-a local volvo specialist hooked it up to his diagnostic system last year. According to his readout, I don't even have a DEM
-the prop shaft spins with all 4 wheels off the ground, and I couldn't stop it with a gloved hand on the damper
-there is power at the DEM.
-the pump runs at what seems to be a normal speed when hooked up to an external battery, but is really noisy.
-there don't appear to be any fluid leaks, so I think the oil level is ok.

The weather here is changing fast, so it may have to wait till spring. Unfortunately, as a FWD vehicle, even with snow tires it has less traction than my old Saturn wagon did.

Must say - this is a pretty good forum!

I had to change my DEM and AOC pump. Same exact diagnosis as the OP. I sent my DEM to be rebuilt for $600 (XeMODex). No more error messages but still no AWD. The AOC pump sounded noisy and feeble when I applied 12v, so that was the next step. I threw in the towel after struggling with the propshaft. My indy mechanic replaced the AOC pump + fluid + filter for $500. AWD is solid since then, 2 years and counting. Expensive, but solid.

Here is what happens, in my humble opinion: The pump motor fails, causing the DEM to fail. More specifically: Fluid in the AOC gets thick, dirty, low, etc - forcing the AOC pump to work harder than anticipated to lock the clutch. The DEM is close to the exhaust, so its already operating at elevated temperature - and trying to force extra amps to the AOC pump burns up the DEM's circuit board.

Hi all. Finally got back to this. This time I got the flange off using the two threaded holes at the back. Had to run a tap through them first.

Unfortunately, I still can't access the flange nut. I've remove the bolts holding the center bearing, and it moves back and forth freely. When I compress the driveshaft, I'm lacking about a quarter inch of clearance to remove the shaft. The exhaust seems to be in the way so I can't really "drop" the center bearing to kink the driveshaft, so I'm at a loss.

    Any ideas?

Take exhaust off of all the hangers, put it down, that will make enough room.
