Default Hit a curb, now "anti skid service required" light.

I hit a curb the other night with my front right wheel. I was going about 25, and hit hard enough to instantly blow the tire. There was a big hole in the sidewall, and a chunk taken out of the rim.

Turns out in recent road construction, they had added a section of curbing jutting out from the sidewalk to segregate some parking spots, which narrowed what was previously a very wide road. It was at night and raining, I didn't even see it.

I had the tire replaced the next day, luckily the rim still holds air and wasn't cracked. The steering wheel is still off significantly to the left too. I haven't gotten it aligned yet.

The day after getting the tire replaced, the "service anti skid" message appeared along with the icon. It's been a few days and it's still on.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? I imagine it's related to the impact, but I suppose it could just be a coincidence too.

Oh, and 145k on the car, btw.

    Thanks!

Most likely if you pull the code you will get a right front wheel speed sensor error due to a now broken sensor, but the code should be able to give you more info.

As for the alignment i would expect at a minimum to have to right front wheel bearing and speed sensor replaced due to the hit along with the outer tierod if your lucky and it's just bent (worst case is the steering rack is destroyed now) before it can be aligned. If the steering wheel is off it's due to destroyed or bent parts, a alignment by it self won't fix it. Also the control arm needs to be inspected carefully along with the ball joint to make sure there not damage.

I would jack the right front up and set a jack stand under it to be safe and remove the right front tire and inspect everything.

Ugh, that's a lot worse than I wanted to hear. All of the steering parts are fairly new, both inner and outer tie rods were replaced within the last 10k miles, along with control arms and ball joints, and the front wheel bearings are about 20k miles old.

I had asked the guy at the tire shop to check for bent parts, and they didn't mention anything. But they also didn't say anything about the wheel being off or ask me about an alignment, so I don't know.

I've been driving it, but am going to stop until I can get a chance to thoroughly check it out.

Interestingly enough, it tracks straight on the highway. The wheel is off, but the car continues going straight if I take my hands off the wheel. I don't know if that's a good or bad sign, haha.

How do I get the code? Is it a Volvo specific scanner, or can Autozone do it?

    Thanks!

If it's still tracking straight it might not be that bad than. Most place will do free alignment checks and should be able to tell you what caused the wheel to be off. Also if your not feeling any extra vibrations than the wheel bearing might be ok.

Also for the code. Has the check engine light came on yet? If not you will need a volvo DICE to have the code looked up.

The anti skid message could be down to the steering wheel angle sensor being off.
It happened on mine after an alignment when they didn't centre the wheel.

No check engine light. I'll give my indie a call tomorrow, maybe he has the scanner. If not, there's a Volvo dealer on my way home from work.

Hopefully Landshark is right and it's just the wheel being off. Is that speed sensitive? Now that I think of it, the light didn't come on until the first time I exceeded 40mph or so after the crash.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope an alignment is all I need!

I've been putting off replacing my driver's side front axle, maybe I'll do that first so I don't need to worry about screwing up the alignment.

I wonder how the steering got off-center. Something moved, or was bent. Could a damaged subframe bushing cause this?

I would think your wheel being off center, while the car drives straight, would trigger an anti-skid system code. Some kind of "implausible" signal from the steering angle sensor. I'd try to get the wheel alignment straightened out and see/hope that takes care of the anti-skid system.

Forgot to post a follow up. I took it for an alignment, and the shop was able to get it into spec and straighten the wheel.

The next day after a highway trip the anti skid light went off, and DTSC is once again active.

Looks like I lucked out, I guess it could have been much worse.

I'm not sure how they could do this,.
For a steering wheel to be off after a hit means you BENT something.
If they masked over the problem by camber and toe adjustments you/they haven't solved the problem!
Something got BENT and apparently still is bent.
