    Default Our XC70 totaled

So the Volvo did it's job and we walked out with just a couple of stitches in my daughter's lip and some bruises. We got hit right in between the front and rear driver's side doors at 45 mph. Thank you Jesus! The Volvo did a good job too and now I am a little scared to buy another make

I would like your thoughts on the loss of safety going from a 2005 to a 1998-2000 model Non-Turbo no AWD. I was looking for a nice 98-00 model when I bought my 05 XC70 and I really liked it but I still have more passion for 98-00. I guess I will lose rear side air bags and a probably a safer chassis. Any thoughts? Or should I just buy another used Honda Odyssey and call it a day?

WOW! Glad you are all OK!
The common wisdom is that 2005-up are the best of this model.

I'll give you a story to illustrate the point I'm going to make.

Bought a 1999 V70 GLT off a 2.5 year lease with 40K miles for about $22K. Over the next 85K miles and 8 years it cost just over $25K in repairs and maintenance.

    Point is, don't buy a 1998-2001 model.

I bought a 2007 XC70 in 2011 off a 3 year 9 month lease with about 55K miles on it for $23.5K. So far it has cost me $4K in repairs and maintenance. That total is not counting the CPO repairs which were done because I had a CPO warranty.

Regardless, look for another 2005+ and do not buy a 1998-2001 model. I round up for peace of mind to not buy a 1997-2003 model.

Glad everyone is okay. I would agree, I would probably avoid 1997-2002 models, but I'm not so sure I would lump 2003s into that grouping. I have a 2003 that I bought brand new in February 2003 and over the life of the car (~12 years), I've put about $13K into it for repairs and maintenance and it's probably a little less than that when you factor in that some of the work was done overseas in the UK where I lived and worked for three years. Everything is a bit more expensive than here in the States. so when you factor that in I'd reckon that it's probably more in the neighborhood of 10-11K had all work been performed here in the States. By comparison I also own a 2007 XC70 which I've owned since November 2006 and I've put almost as much money into it as I have the 2003. It's really a crap shoot, but generally speaking, I think the 2003-2007 range of XC70 are fairly reliable. Of course, it always depends on how well the car was maintained by the previous owner -- thus to some degree, it's always "buyer beware." I would certainly look for something 2003+. Good luck! And I personally would never consider a Honda Odyssey. :-)
    Cheers, Gary

So, so, so, so glad you and your family are OK. How is your daughter doing after such a traumatic event?

Did her head hit the side curtain air bag?

That's about the worst position to get hit in and at 45mph is a severe impact. So glad you and the family are OK, and would like to know more, as I drive a 2004 and a 2000.

This is exactly what I keep telling to wife when she starts complaining about repair costs (which I do myself): you'll get out alive from your crashed Volvo, not that sure about the other guy in his same age car, even "more reliable" aka Japanese.

If you care about safety, buying an older vehicle is not worth it: even if it still has all safety features working, the car in general has less of them than newer one. You are safer in 2010-ish Toyota than in 1998 Volvo. Of course, you are even more safer in 2010-ish Volvo

Going through that right now... CEL keeps popping on and off, and I just replaced whole PCV system, all motor mounts, have most suspension components waiting to be installed. seemingly does not end!

Man I hate the bad press that my 2001 V70 XC gets, yeah I've done quite a bit of maintenance, but at 200,000 miles I think most cars are headed for the dismantler. People are always amazed when I tell them it's a 14 year old car, it still looks amazing, drives incredible and is the best thing I've bought in years. Newer models may be better but the older ones still rock! (No matter what JBL may say)
Glad your family is okay, I say buy another one, buy up as much as you can afford but remember, the results of your crash could have been tragic in another brand...what's that worth?
