    Hello
I am new to the forum and have just purchased a 2004 XC90 AWD 2.5t with 31,000 one owner miles from an Arizona Volvo dealer. They have complete service records at the dealership, report no trouble codes or issues and it has passed AZ emissions. I am having the car shipped to California, Ca requires a seperate new smog test.

Can anyone tell me if the Ca standards for emission testing (smog test ) are more or less stringent than in AZ. My concern is, will this vehicle pass smog in Ca, even though it passes in AZ at the dealer. Thanks in advance. rinconmn

You want to make sure that the car is CA emission rated. Many cars are rated Federal or CA. If the XC90 is only rated Federal it may not pass the CA emission standard as CA has the toughest standards in the US and possibly the world.

    Hi ssicarman
I will call the dealer and ask, as it was sold by the volvo dealership new. Is it the VIN # that will tell me if Ca or Fed emission rated ? They swear it will pass, but from your advice it might not hurt to pursue this. Thanks, rinconmn.

My 2008 70 has an emission label on the right side of the hood near the windshield that has CA on it which to me indicates that it is rated for CA. I am not in the USA so if mine is CA rated then I suspect that any modern Volvo will be.

Not necessary. Once a car is a used car, ANY (US) car can come to CA and as long as there are no check engine lights it will pass smog.
I think CA now uses the current FEDERAL test that most states that have an emission test use, it's pretty strict.
I would not worry about a 30K mile car at all
