WOW Howard, that is great information and does sound likely. Will have to put that in my tool box memory if it ever comes up in the future.

So.. when you put in D, it moves a few meter then slips ? Then you go back to P and then again D and it drives again ?
Can you into Reverse ? Does the car move (as in Neutral) when you're in Park ? If so.... check for a drive axle, it might have popped-out of the transmission. Been there done that.

    An update for those interested...

On the 01 V70XC with 60k miles rebuilt tranny (changed the radiator at the same time as tranny) that doesn't go into gear. Called level10 transmission and spoke to someone that sees and rebuilds 25-30 AW55-50s per week. I mentioned the high fluid level at engine idle and why I suspected the pump. He asked... does the car move if let it set for awhile and gets real cold? I said yes and he said its not the pump... filters are clogged and when that happens, all the friction materials burns up... He said replacing the valvebody (a few filter screens inside) might keep it running for a little while but will die again.

Not sure this is OPs problem but just an update on the no shift AW55-50 I've been helping to diagnose for future references.

Just wanted to bump this for future reference, just had an 02 XC70 completely lock up after I tried pushing another car up a hill. Didn't matter warm or cold, no shift position helped, geartronic didn't help. Neutral worked though. Replacing the 3 solenoids solved this one, for a year. So ya a XC70 can completely brick the tranny and it clearly was stuck solenoids. Just so ya know.

BTW I spent hours thinking it was the RA Gear or some internal gears,....had broken or some other mech issue,...not the case,...
