Default I added a heatsink to my 2004 CEM CPU

One common issue with my 2004 (and other years) is the CEM CPU overheats on hot summer days. Basically all interior controls go dead except for the fan, but the car will continue to run and drive. I purchased a 1" square heatsink with adhesive backing for $7.50 from Digikey.

robert - thanks for posting...what was the Digikey part number? Also - how did you remove it? Did you also have to remove all the other plugged in components to get at the CEM? This applies to all 2001-2004 Volvo XC70's. In 2005, Volvo added a heat sink to the CEM but did nothing for the 01-04 owners...

Hello, the Digikey part number is ATS1200-ND:
    http://www.digikey.com/product-searc...rds=ats1200-nd

I had to remove all the shunts and relays to remove it, then the top plastic cover and the top metal lid. I learned the removal/install procedure from this video:

We have a '04 XC70. Ours would give a brake failure stop warning and the engine / transmission lurch. With my son ~ 250 miles away with the car, failure was unacceptable. I sent the CEM to XeMODeX for rebuilding an an added heat sink. No further issues.

Trying to remove the CEM. The Xemodex video is absolute rubbish for showing you how to remove the CEM. Any tips? Video says "push against bracket and lift CEM forward and down". Right. Push where? It's a metal bracket that doesn't move. Anyone have a suggestion? Here is the picture of the 'bendable' bracket (it isn't).

Okay, I figured it out. On the left side of the CEM bracket which is closest to the drivers door there is a small clip that holds the CEM in place - pull it away from the CEM (it's like a latch) and it allows you to pull forward and you can slide it down.

So - again on the left side of the CEM where there is no space is a latch - pull it away and presto - CEM is free to pull slight forward from the bottom and then you can pull it all down.

Total time to figure out CEM latch: 45 minutes. Time to actually unplug CEM and remove the relays and then stick on the heat sink, reconnect, and put back in, reconnect battery and put all back together - 20 minutes.

Recommend instead of using that silly step where you print off replay positions and use marker to identify which is which - forget it. Take a picture with your phone as all the relays are the same. Put relays in similar order on floor and then you're set to simply plug it all back in.

Note: take care opening the CEM case as the plastic is 12+ years old and brittle. Also, keep off that silly silver CEM CPU metal cover that really causes mostly of the heat issues.

No issues and I'm keeping the custom cooling fan in place.

    Ed
