    My shimmed clutch works great. On both cars.

    I would add that I removed the clutch, and adjusted the shims on the shaft, then reinstalled.

    If you can get a feeler gauge in the gap, anything over 0.020 inches is too much. a big gap, like mine at 0.035, will cause the compressor to cut out when hot.
