Default Tiny grill in climate control unit?

2004 XC70. I was just eyeballing that grill today. You know - the one with the three horizontal slits. It appears to be plugged with the automotive equivalent of toe-jam. Is there supposed to be something in there like that, or is that just funk which has been sucked in by the system and needs to be extracted?
Objects in closer are mirror than they appear.

That's a dust ball behind the slots. There is a little fan pulling air through those slots to an interior temp sensor on the back of the climate module. You should vacuum or pick the dust ball out to get full flow to the temp sensor.

Be careful picking out the dust bunnies. There is a wire behind the 2 slits that is the temperature sensor. If broken, have to replace the climate control or fix the temperature sensor.

Sometimes, threads can jam up the fan behind the slits and it won't pull air over the temperature sensor wire and heat control won't work (except at MAX). Removing the climate control (PITA) and disassemble+cleaning the fan is required to remedy this.

    Just blow them out
Buy some compressed air in a can, use the long plastic nozzle and BLOW! (That little plastic nozzle fits inside the slats)
When done, also clean your computer

Hey JRL can the dirty temp sensor behind the slots cause the a/c to blow warm, then when shut down for a while and restarted blow cold again? Just wondering. That's my issue. I just checked and my sensor is gunked up. I'm cleaning it either way. Thanks

Well I cleaned it. It was very dusty and now it's clean as new. What else may be the cause? I have the specifics in this post: http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...ssue-2004-XC70

Climate control unit (CCM) needs to be calibrated (on VIDA).
If that doesn't fix the problem it's broken, then you buy a used one from someone like Erie Volvo

Can I purchase the VIDA software and components and do it myself? Seems I saw that somewhere on here before.
