I have 38K miles on my '01 XC and the transmission fluid
is pretty dark. The dealer suggested to replace it, but
at &#3625/quart and approximately 12 quarts needed I would
like to find out if it's really necessary to do that.

You absolutely should. That's not many miles for an 01 XC but compared to a 3 year old 38K mile car its probably seen a lot more wear. Changing the fluid will do a lot to prolong the life of your transmission.

The transmission is one of those things that can fail and costs more than the car is worth by the time it does. To me it's worth spending $90 3 or 4 times over the life of the vehicle to very possibly extend it's usable life by several tens of thousands of miles.

I have gone to Valvoline and gotten their full synthetic transmission flush. Not all of them will have a machine for it so you might want to call ahead. But I read on here that the valvoline synthetic meets the OEM spec, while probably exceeding it. I don't think OEM specifies a synthetic fluid.

It needs to meet JWS 3309 spec. Mobil makes the OEM fluid for Volvo and Toyota.

This is a good price for a pack of 12 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-55221-Au.../dp/B00BLKXW9O

redline lists jws 3309 compatibility and names our vehicles specifically.

That second one ( http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Vo...22&0&1&cc5_869 ) is definitely not recommended as it doesn't even list that it meets JWS 3309...

If you use the second one you WILL destroy the tranny, the first is OK
Best bet is to buy Toyota fluid it's the exact same 3309 fluid you need
Also go to your dealer and upgrade the transmission software ASAP

I honestly think you guys are a *little* too attached to the OE non-synthetic T-IV stuff.
Across ever other make of car, people are replacing their JWS 3309 / T-IV with synthetic alternatives and getting better shift quality, more durable and longer living transmissions.

People blowing up T-IV specified aisin transmissions with dexron III makes sense to me, but using redline D4 and adding an aftermarket trans fluid cooler should make these things last twice as long as normal service intervals using the cheapo dino oil, based on a lot of non-volvo experience.

Note: The friction properties of this transmission fluid are different from other fluids due to the large amount of converter clutch slip. Failure to use the correct fluid will cause transmission damage and codes.
