    Default Gearbox/Transmission oil leak

So since I got my XC70 I've noticed some sweating underneath, but after the car went for a normal service, there was droplets underneath and I could clearly see that it was pink transmission oil. Car was now leaving oil spots everywhere it went.

Checked the dipstick to make sure that I don't lose too much oil, I found that it was overfilled, A LOT!

Earlier this week I started looking for the "leak" and one of the guys at my shop told me that the gearbox could be pushing out ATF through a breather valve somewhere. Phoned the indy mechanic that worked on the car and he said that he thinks they may have topped up the ATF.

Anyway, I basically started to drain off some fluid to get the level back into speck. During the last three days, I must have drained off 1.5 litres of ATF and now finally the level on the dipstick was between Cold and Hot.

My dad took the car for a drive now, will check the level when he gets back and I'm hoping against all hope that the leak will be less or maybe cured.

Over filled transmissions will bleed fluid from a vent.

More importantly, how are you checking the fluid level?

    Checking via the yellow dipstick.

So far so good. No fluid to be seen after a 40km drive.

I understand that you're using the yellow dipstick, but there are a few more conditions: trans at 80C, engine idling, car on level ground.

The trans is very sensitive to fluid level, and it only takes 200ml to go from add to full...

Indeed. Since the dipstick has hot and cold levels, I've done hot and cold tests.

Level seems fine now, will keep an eye on it for a while still.
