Default Recommended Upgrade to protect your XC...

If you have a 2003-2007 XC70, I strongly recommend getting the IPD DEM heat shield. Why? Well, after mine burnt out for being too hot last week, I didn't know about this upgrade until mine went. The design of the differential electronic module design isn't perfect and it's an expensive repair.

Dealership you're looking at $2000+ (for about $15 worth of circuit board stuff). Rebuild is $500 but your vehicle is down for about a week. 2 day ship there, two day ship back.

Part is $60 and it prevents around $600 in bills. Takes 10 minutes to install. http://www.ipdusa.com/products/9029/...-dem-p2-p3-awd

Recommended preventative maintenance for any P2 AWD Volvo.

How does this help the DEM from getting to hot? Looks more like a protection cover than anything. What happened to your that you know it got to hot?

I just wonder if the car can't be used without the DEM.

It basically a heat heat from ground surfaces and protects it from cold and debris from the road. The heat shield on it is quite small and flimsy. And they fail a lot unfortunately. Xemodex makes its living on fixing broken Volvo electronic components for a reason.

ED, does IPD recommend a thermally conductive epoxy to improve heat dissipation?

A what? Thermmmlll - who knows. I'm not reselling them, just recommending the product to avoid an expensive repair bill down the line - kind of like putting a helmet on riding a bicycle. It protects - and you never know when you may need it.

This thing can't improve heat dissipation, by design.

Correct - not internally, but it will reflect road heat and other debris from coming into contact with the DEM - which is what toasted my DEM. Super hot day, driving hard, hot road. 10 year old DEM. And poof, Anti-Skid Service Required message. DEM was toasted.

It can't reflect too much heat, since radiation component of usual temperatures on Earth surface is not substantial to account for in heat exchange process.

What this cover really does, I think, is just protecting DEM from road debris. Oh, and it looks cool

I think it can prevent some radiated heat, it is silver, thermally isolated from the black DEM by an air space, with air flow over it when the car is moving. Also pretty easy to make one yourself.
