Question Is this the right AC compressor?

The shim trick isn't working on the AC clutch anymore, so I ordered a replacement from Erie. I just got the part and it has a different clutch on it. I sent a picture of it to Erie and they said it was a newer clutch design and I should be fine, but I figured I would check on here if anyone else has run into this.

    Yep, wife's 2002 V70 has 2nd clutch:

Bread clips fix does not work with it.

Just shimmed the XC's clutch this morning...but I did it by removing the clutch and thinning down/removing the shims on the shaft...not the bread clip method. I did have to unbolt the compressor and move it towards the starter to gain enough clearance for the puller but the clutch was pretty easy to unbolt (one 10mm bolt) using the AC compressor wrench, and to pull off using the puller (an aluminum block with a threaded center and three slots each at 120 degrees to each other). Harder to put back on as I had to hold the compressor wrench while tightening the 10mm bolt on a loose compressor. Figure about an hour for the job since it included removing all of the intake piping for clearance and the serpentine belt, unbolting the compressor, then pulling the clutch, working the shims, and re-assembling everything. I didn't have to disconnect the Freon hoses, just move the compressor about 1.5" to the right.

I went from 0.036" of clearance on the clutch to 0.018", which should be within tolerance.

Time will tell if the fix works.

All of the replacement clutches and compressors that I looked at had the new design...so, I think that's progress...not a concern. I figured I would need the tool whether I tried re-shimming the clutch or replacing it, so I bought this: http://www.alltradetools.com/catalog...it-kit-65.html (about $70 on Amazon)...and my fix cost exactly zero beyond the tool purchase...

How on earth did you get the clutch off in the car? I was barely able to get my hands in the get the bread clips on...

The little rubber pieces that help hold the end of the clutch out were missing the last time, so I finally decided I've had enough of losing the AC while driving. last time I was in Baltimore with friends and it was a loooooong warm drive home!

Remove fan, PS pump, alternator, unbolt AC compressor, move it 2-3" to the center of engine bay - that will clear enough space.

OK, so my mechanic drained the system, replaced the compressor and recharged the system. In the morning the AC was nice and cold, it was about 70 degrees outside. By the afternoon the AC wasn't blowing very cold at all and it was 87 outside. The next morning with the temps down again the AC was blowing cold.

Other than not adding enough refrigerant, or not adding it correctly, is there anything else I should have them check when I bring it back on Monday?

Sounds like the replacement compressor is no good. I take I that the compressor from Erie was used?

yes it was a used/refurbished compressor from Erie... Do you really think it's the compressor, not the refrigerant?

OK, update... I brought it back to the shop that installed the compressor this morning. It was over-filled, since they filled in in the shop and it was cooler in there. They removed some of the refrigerant and it's all happy again... time to throw-out my stock of bread clips!!
