I was getting about 18 for the last year or so; a combine highway and city, but mostly highway miles. I changed out the front oxygen sensor and I'm back up to about 22/23. highway-only, if I reset the computer it'll get about 27-28 with a pretty constant speed of 70.

Yeah, I guess I'm a Volvo guy... ;-)
Over the past year, that’s what I’ve averaged: between 21 and 22 MPG, with a significant dip this winter due to the terrible weather and short distance driving.
If I drive in town a lot, fuel economy tends to hover around 20MPG, but with some highway mixed in I tend to end up a little higher. If I drive only highway, the car is capable of some good mileage: I drove to NYC and back this weekend, averaging 28.9 measured MPG over 325 miles, which I thought was great. The trip computer said I had averaged 29.4 MPG, so it wasn’t even too far off.
Averaging 24 combined here on an 06 XC70, couldn't tell ya the city/highway splits. Took a trip from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA and back and averaged 29 MPG - almost all I-5 cruisin. Not bad for the big ol Vo.

If I keep it right around 60 and mostly highway in the summer it is around 28 - 29. I try to keep it just under 70 on the freeway and can usually stay over 27. Mixed driving for me usually will always return near 25. Even in the winter I don't think I have gone below 20 but due to where I live there is always at least half highway miles on a tank. This is typically with 89 octane. Sometimes I put about 5 or 6 gallons of 91 or 92 in with it and I think I pick up about an MPG but not sure. The times I have run all 91 or 92 the mileage did not improve and I think it went down a touch. I don't like the sound or feel of 87 so I don't run that except sometimes when it is really cold in the winter.
Curious if anyone has a firm conclusion on different octane and MPG?
Also curious where your typical high RPM shift point is? Normally I'm at right around 3k. If I'm having a little fun it might go to about 4.5k. It isn't too often that I go over that. Wondering if those who are getting low to sub 20 are pushing it to consistently shift above 4k? Drive 80+? For me, Highway driving with full 92 octane at 80+ yields about 23 mpg.

I get 21-22 mpg average all types of driving, mostly around town stop and go on the weekends 60% highway (with commute traffic) 40% city during the week. Not that bad it's actually about 1 mpg better than my previous outback H6.
Jim - you can browse cars on Fuelly and get a cross section:

Cars will vary by geographic area (weather conditions, roads, fuel available, season). The most important data point is your own fuel economoy - which is part of why I track mine - to note any trends downwards which could indicate something like a bad O2 sensor.
