    Question 2011 XC70 P0286 OBDII code ???

Traded my 07' XC70 for this one a bit more than a month ago. CEL came up today, read it with an OBDII scanner - code is U0286, Google it:
    <http://www.vehix411.com/tag/dtc-codes/>
    says:
U0286 Lost Communication With Radiator Anti Tamper Device

    What is That..???

I have refilled windshield washing fluid earlier today...

    -Michael,

    -Michael,
Just an update - since then the CEL went away, and came back, and then went away again on its own ...

can't find anything is VIDA about this code...but I found some description on the internet about this device ( if you didn't so already):

    RATD (Radiator Anti Tampering Device)

The RATD system is a diagnostic system designed to identify that a PremAirĀ® treated radiator is installed in the car. If the system is tampered with such as by means of removing the sensor from the radiator or replacing the radiator with another radiator then a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated.
To ensure that the correct radiator is installed during replacement, radiators with fitted RATD unit are only available as a complete spare part.
The RATD system communicates with the ECM via LIN.

Now - they are talking that the radiator has a built-in sensor and it sells as a whole unit...that could be a lot of expense to replace I would imagine...
did you do any cooling system works recently? If not I would probably ignore this code for now, because this loss-of-communication codes usually don't raise an engine light warning on your DIM. For example anytime I plug-in VIDA I have always loss-of-communication for the power windows modules or power date at some stage and it doesn't mean anything really - just a warning that at some point ECM could not get the nessessary signal from the particular module. Keep in mind that all these modules are very sensitive on battery voltage. If your battery goes slightly lower they stars loosing communication with the ECM and codes are generated.
    Hope that helps.

Yes, this pretty much what I found too. CEL comes and goes. It seems to be correlated to "moisture". It's a CPO car, I am not doing any work on it besides filling the gas and windshield washer fluid. :-). First time it happened after I filled the windshield washer fluid, probably splashed some on the radiator? Last time it was during the really bad rain. Going to the dealership for 52,500 maintenance next week, let them deal with it... Just my wife is trained to respond to the CEL, and it gets her excited when it happens, and I have to get my trusty OBD-II reader to read the code and to confirm that it is indeed this one and not something new...
To me it speaks of the flaky electric connectors, and means that keeping this car like I did with the older Volvos till 200+Kmiles is going to be a major PITA, and most probably be traded-in for something else once CPO warranty is over..

don't get overexcited about those little error codes as I said before, because they are what they are - just intermittent loss of signal levels between the modules. If you can give the dealer sh$% for it and made them change the radiator - great - I would do the same just for the sake of all other enthusiast here on this forum that fix their cars themselves.
On a second note I would recommend you to buy one of those clone VIDA DICE scanners (100 bucks or so) and read yourself the car state regularly just to be aware of what's going on even if the car is on lease. Dealer can't tell if you plugged in any scanner before unless you updated any of the modules (e.g clear error codes etc.) so you are safe. Later if you decide to go "south" :-) and by Beemer or Merc you can always resell the DICE for a good money.
    Hope this helps.

What's a good place to buy the DICE, I've read very mixed reviews, more than half of them being dead on arrival.

I bought my VIDA DICE from these guys --> http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/226018849.html
I think this would be the best for the price you can find on the market and they do free delivery to US/Canada as well. The device works without an issue 1 year so far and is pretty handy for the price I must admit. I used it may times to configure modules and am pretty happy with it. It comes with the VIDA install as well, but read carefully the instructions, because it will require you to update the firmware on the DICE device and if you screw it - game over - you can't use the DICE anymore...
And yes - they are from China - but I am pretty sure that by now all of the Volvo software development is outsource to China mainland anyway, so you are getting it directly from the "source". :-)
