Default How much play in parking brake from down to engage ?

I did my e-brakes a few years back (not many miles on them) but the handle has loosened somewhat over time.

Is this something that an adjustment of the tensioner in console can fix with no adverse effects to the grabbing of the drum?

And how much slack should there be from down, if any?

Volvo states full engage between 2-5 clicks. I say just tight enough to not allow the shoes to rattle over bumps and drag in the drum.

When I bought my '05 back in October, I don't think the e-brake was ever used by the POs. It was 3 clicks to full on. Once the cables stretch a bit, like they have on my '02, any adjustment usually feels about right at 4-5 clicks. Too tight and you're bound to drag one side first. Unlike the P80 chassis that had both cables adjustable, the P2s have a yoke with a single adjustment that over time just doesn't seem to adjust evenly. I ended up using the in-drum adjusters to try and even things up when I had nearly full lock on one side and not much of anything on the other.

    Cheers,

Handle will loosen a bit when the new shoes bed in. Personally, I install new shoes and then drive the car and use the parking brake to stop it twice from 30 MPH (letting it cool a bit between stops).

Then adjust the handle for 3 clicks up.

This works for Volvo and Mercedes, though the MB is a foot pedal, it is the same set up and I've done shoes on all 4 cars.

    See the resource section.

10mm open end wrench and a nylon trim tool are all you need to adjust it on a Volvo.

After applying my new shoes a couple of times to stop the car, similar to what Astro suggests, I then tested on a moderate grade, and adjusted so that 3-4 clicks would keep the car from rolling down hill in neutral.
