Default Inner and Outer Tie help

Just spent half a day trying to remove the outer tie rod with no success!
Do I really need an impact wrench? Or is there a way to do this?
I used my 1/2 inch breaker bar but the nut just kept spinning (really tight).

I have a 2004 XC70 and I am trying to replace the inner and outer tie rods.
Any help is appreciated, I am going to go at it tomorrow after work if I get the right help.

    Thanks!

That sucks. I just did mine and the outers came right out, no issues with the outer nuts. Lots of PB blaster I guess, and impact wrench if needed. I just used a socket wrench.

The inners were giving me fits until I did exactly what the youtube videos said to do; use a pipe wrench. Then they came off really easily.

I would help you but I am in VA

Just to confirm, you are trying to disassemble the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle?

I recall mine had flat spots on top of the outer tie rod ball joint's shaft to hold it with a crescent wrench while a wrench to break loose the nut. Surely this is not what you are referring to right? It would be quite obvious. I believe I did mine exactly same way as the pictures in this link. If the shaft isn't held, then the nut may just spin with the ball joint in the socket. Anyhow, its quite obvious so perhaps I've misunderstood the problem you are having.

I used vise grips to no avail, but the tutorial mentioned is what I need to do, again, I guess. Thanks!

ah, ok, sounds like your nut and balljoint shaft is probably rusted frozen pretty good? I only had to hold the shaft with a crescent wrench.

Might try CRC Freeze Off to bust those 2 rusted parts loose. I've seen some descent reviews on this stuff

Vice grips have usually worked for me but you have to get them on the metal, not over the rubber of course, and really put the meat to them to be able to get enough torque on the rusty nut. I have also liberally applied Deep Creep (made by the SeaFoam folks) which really does work better than any other rust penetration I've tried. And finally, I have had to resort to a nut splitter one time. This last one is the last resort option but it is effective especially if you have started to round the nut off.

    Good Luck,

    Angry update

Well, I gave it another go and ended up 1) cutting both the outer rod's top but and the inner rod off, yeah, it was pretty messy, but got them both out.

It took me 20 minutes to complete the passenger side!

The alignment is way off and guy at the shop told me it might need extra adjustments $$$
    Anyways, waiting to be done.

Well after $160, the XC70 is back though I am concern about the following:

    1. Ride feels rough and I can feel more vibration
    2. The left tire squeaks at randomly and going straight at low speed and for sure when turning or going over painted asphalt
    3. For some reason the front end had gained about an 1inch of clearance???

For those of you who know more about alignment, this is what the numbers look like now:

    Caster:
    was- L4.6/R4.4
    is now- L4.5/R4.4

    Camber
    was- L0.9/R1.0
    is now- L0.3/R0.4

    Toe
    was- L0.95/R1.25
    is now- L0.10/R0.10

Caster is not adjustable but both sides are about the same so that's OK. Camber is within range but I personally prefer to see it on the negative side of 0 about .5 to .75 degrees (I run mine at about 1 degree negative) for a "regular" setup. Toe is right at spec as I recall it without looking it up.

As far as the gain in ride height, something isn't right there especially if it doesn't come back to what it's supposed to be after a few miles. Might want to double-check that and verify.

    Cheers,
