Gibbons has an excellent thread concerning nine steps to being able to start your car that has the stuck key broken switch condition. I want to add some of my observations to that thread for those of you that might experience the same fate with your XC70.

In step one Gibbons says to use a #20 Torx driver to remove the cover. I found that my XC70 required a #25 Torx driver. However the electrical switch did require a #20.

When removing the shift interlock cable from the right side of the mechanical switch you need to place the key in the switch and move it to position one. Then pushing on the tab and pulling forward with the cable will remove it from the switch housing.

I could not engage the starter with the electrical switch removed from the mechanical switch and the screw driver inserted. Got a message on the dash indicating immobilizing issue.
