Temperature gauge?

I have been driving for 43 years, and have owned cars for 42 years. The XC60 is the first vehicle owned that does not have a temperature gauge.

I know that the electronics will monitor temperature and display a message if the engine temperature exceeds the specified threshold, so I am not worried about that.

However, over the years I had saved at least three engines from excessive wear by noticing (on the temperature gauge) that the engine takes an awfully long time time to reach normal operating temperature, i.e. that the thermostat was faulty - most recently on my XC70.

It seems the only way to handle this "deficiency" is through preventative measures, i.e. to replace the thermostat at xxx miles whether faulty or not?

Most modern engines with the computerized fuel injection systems monitor the engine temp and will set a code (P0128 is the usual code) if the thermostat is not letting the engine get up to temp or taking to long to get to temp.

I agree, it is odd, Mazdas now have a blue light that goes out when the engine is at temp.
