I have but 2K miles on my 2002 XC. I have just started to notice a flare (slippage) in the transmission on the second to third gear shift. With light acceleration I get none. With moderate acceleration the tach will jump about 300 rpm before settling into third gear. With more aggressive acceleration (not foot to the floor&#33 the tach will jump 5-700 rpm. Very unsettling to say the least. This does not occur with any other shift point. The car has been fully warmed up when this occurs.

Anybody seen this before. I will be calling the service dept.

Sounds like a software adjustment will solve that problem. Let us know.

This sounds very much like the problem that I have reported also ( see the topic Geartronic Transmission Problems. Is it just me? ) . It has happened myabe a dozen times since the car was new (6mth/7500k). Dealer has not been able to find any problem or any fault code.

Sounds like we have very similar problems. My problem seems only to be between the 2-3 upshift and only at moderate to aggressive acceleration. The car is going in on Friday, I'll let you know what's what.

    Hi all,

Just got the 2002 XC back from the shop. All is well, now. I was not imagining the flare.

Repair involved software update 847 and adaptation of the control module per tech note 43-27. The description of the service is 'upgrade TCM S 11 35.'

Hope this helps all experiencing this problem.

I just had my 2002 V70XC in for its 12,000Km service. I specifically asked about "Flare" and was told that software updates are determined by VIN. Since my VIN ended in 079060 there was no software update available.

Can anyone confirm or negate this contention?

By the way, I paid $126.40 CDN for labour and and $23.05 for parts i.e., oil, gasket, filter insert and a $1.50 Environmental Charge related to the oil. I assume the Envir Charge is for Oil disposal.

WOW! That roughly $105US for the 12,000 km service.... Might want to post that comment over in the 7500miles service thread... GREAT price (comparatively speaking that is....)

All modern Volvo cars are tracked by VADIS wrt to software configs. One of the keys to the VADIS database is your car's VIN. If your car requires a new software update then VADIS will/should know via the VIN.

Each time I take my car in for servicing I have them run a sanity check with VADIS to ensure my car's software config is up to date -- and they tell me if anything was downloaded. There shouldn't be any cost associated with this activity.

I have a 2002 V70XC, 24,000km, and in very rare instances have experienced the same flare as described in this thread under hard acceleration conditions. Took it to the dealer and they indicated no problem with the trany, software is up to date. I think there may be some unresolved software problems Volvo is still working on.

I just had my 03 in for the 7500 mile service, mentioned the flare. I duplicated the problem with a dealer service tech in the car - no solution. also, while the car was in, a volvo technician went through the entire car could find no problems. he was also on the phone with engineers from Sweden. consequently, they have fitted my car with a flight recorder to capture info when it happens. so far it has happened twice since the recorder has been attached. the recorder will be sent to North Carolina for analysis after I turn it back in. oh, the problem happens on the upshift from 2nd to 3rd at about 20 mph.
