I think before you go out and buy an expensive part you should try to take a sound clip and post it here.
I (and others here) are pretty familiar with all the odd noises Volvo make, what you think is loud could be "normal" or at least not something that needs to be addressed immediately.
Edited post
I get annoyed at a dumb question so I suppose I just hammered it out without looking at what I posted

I appreciate all of the input. The sound is not normal. It just started yesterday - my wife and I both noticed it immediately. Radiator Fan is revving up to full speed right after start and then when you stop the car you hear it rev down. We are taking it by the garage later this afternoon to have our mechanic listen to/look at it. Car drives fine, not overheating, no engine lights.
I suspect that you're going to have to get a new fan...that said, I still am not certain of what you're writing in your post...
I stop my car at red lights, and at stop signs. Does your new noise cease when you stop the car? Or does your new noise cease when you turn off the engine?
I know what airplanes sound like when they're taking off...I cannot imagine your car makes a noise anything like that...so, I presume you're talking about a loud fan noise...YOU know what you mean by airplane taking off, but it's an ambiguous description at best (passenger jet? Fighter? single-engine piston? Twin?), and it would really help if you posted a video clip...the whole description lacks precision...internet diagnosis is difficult at best...made more difficult in this case.

It's a very loud fan sound coming from the radiator fan. Starts when we start the car and does not cease until we turn off the engine. It is at the mechanics now. I will let you know what we find out. Sorry for being vague - it is difficult to do this by internet. Input appreciated.
Ok. We confirmed it is the radiator fan that is running at all times. Right after engine start until engine stop. Cool engine and all... no engine light on yet. The garage was super backed up and we will not know for sure until we can get it back in to run a full diagnostic. I searched the internet and found many others with similar symptoms. Could be fan unit or sensor of some sort. Won't know until next week. Apparently OK to drive until then however. We'll see.
In this weather, I am sure it's OK to drive.
When the garage does get to it, you want them to test before replacing. I don't know if this runs off a separate coolant temp sensor (some do) but that's where I would start (cheap part). The relay that controls the fan is integral with the fan itself...so, if it's relay, you get the whole fan unit...not cheap ($300 maybe?)

UPDATE: Brought the car in to the garage today. They had run a search in their system previously looking for the symptom "fan runs continuously at start up" and the first thing it suggested checking was the Refrigerant Level. That was it! Only registered .2lbs - They filled and recharged and fan issue is gone. They put a dye in so that we can come back in a couple of weeks and determine where the leak is.
Did this get resolved?
The last post before yours is going on FOUR (4) YEARS OLD!!
Don't you look at the dates?
I'm sure he's not here anymore, I don't recall seeing any posts of his since
