Default drive shaft boot and cowl

Hi everyone, I'm still a total newbie when it comes to maintaining my xc70, but slowly I'm getting used to her. Anyway today I changed back to summer tires and noticed that the driveshaft on the front wheels doesn't have a boot where it connects to the transmission/differential is this normal? Does the plastic skid plate provide enough protection from the elements?

Secondly I have noticed that my xc70' plastic cowl is slightly deformed in places and there are gaps between it and the windshield. Is this normal since the cowl is made of a bendable plastic? Any suggestions to fix it?

Neither is normal and the missing CV boot should be sorted straight away or you'll be buying a whole shaft soon, especially if you are in a "gritty" environment. Although the belly pan will keep some stuff out, it isn't a replacement for a proper CV boot. Are you sure you are looking at the right thing. A missing or torn boot makes an absolute mess allowing all that CV grease to be slung around. That would be noticeable.

As far as the cowl cover, they can warp a little bit but they really should still fit under the windshield holding lip completely. This thing have a windshield replaced?

    Good luck,

Yeah, I had to replace the windshield and had to take it to an autobody shop after it was beat up in a hail storm last summer. I tried bending the cowl back with a heat gun, but it's still a little warped in some places and I'm afraid that driving in the rain will push water in there.

Maybe i'm just overreacting, but here's what it looks like right now:

On driver side. There are 2 CV joints and 2 boots. One near the hub, one just before going into the transmission. Looks like this

On passenger side, there are also 2 CV joints and boots. However, there is no CV joint where the shaft goes into the angle gear. Perhaps this is where you are looking(?) since you said it connects to the transmission/differential.

    Howard:

Ah, you are right. Forgot all about the diff side of the passenger side shaft. Doh! And I was just under there this weekend taking a look as part of my spring "pre-flight".

    Cheers,
