    Default Wheel locks

Has anyone had wheel lock that will not come off on there 04 xc70. The locks got put on too tight and now it will not come out. Any input would be appreciated.

I often find that tire shops (and the dealer) install lug nuts/wheel bolts too tight...for that I have a 3' piece of 3/4 electric conduit, slips over a 1/2" drive breaker bar...and then, I use a 1/2" torque wrench to get it right...

Take a socket that fits tight over the wheel lock and hammer it on. Once its wedged on you can usually spin it off. I have used this method before when I lost my wheel lock key. If you check YouTube, there are plenty of videos on how to remove locking lug nuts.

If you cant get yours out, just drill out the head of the bolt. start with a 1/4" Drill bit, then a 1/2".

Thank you for the information, now I will go back to work and discuss it with my Tech.

We had thought about removing the Hub & Bearing assy. since I have the KMS on it already.

I was just at my indie mechanic for some servicing (leaky rad, rear brakes) and he recommended I replace my locking nuts with regular bolts because he has seen too many strip trying to get them off. I was OK with this because they seem like more bother than they are worth, but I was wondering if this is commonly done? If the purpose is theft prevention, it seems pointless since there are many lock removal tools available and any thief prepared to remove wheels will know how to get around a locking nut.

That is why I think they are just a nuisance. Still, new luxury cars are being sold with this daft feature as standard or as an additional "fee". BMW adds $120 to the invoice on a new car for it! No doubt some areas and some vehicles will have a risk of wheel theft, but I doubt it is necessary for most owners. At any rate, I am glad I replaced them.
