Wink Horrible noise in my 2001 XC70 backend

This noise just developed in the past week, sounds like metal grinding around the back right wheel. Starts upon accelerating, less noise while turning. Loud enough to make people look when I drive by, at first I thought it was rocks in my wheel....but now sounds like, as someone on the forum said, "gravel grinding in the wheels." Having the town mechanic look at it, but can't get it to my Volvo guy until next week. Safe to drive?

Two guesses: a bad bearing; or parking brake components failed.

If the noise is so loud that it is being noticed, in my opinion, whatever the problem is, it isn't something to drive through....

    Good luck.

Check for rocks lodged between rotor and other parts. Had that happen in the past.

No, stop! not safe to drive, but damage already is done, I believe it is e-brake shoe grinding, and does not take more than 3 minutes to damage, cost will be around$500 plus labor if you canot do it yourself. search my post and see what hapened to my 02 XC70.
    Good luck.

Yep, suspect e-brake as well ... hopefully, you haven't fried the hubs and rotors in all the grinding...and it's just the shoes...

    Default Noise problem solved

Well, it was the wheel bearings after all. Gonna cost me about $650. Car has 215K though and still going strong. Thanks for all of your help!
