Default Pop in the transmission and lack of power

01 v70 XC with 117K miles on it. At 112K it got a lot of attention (tranny flush w Toyota IV,timing belt, tranny software reset + upgrades, H20 pump, complete front suspension, front axle, hubs, crankcase system, turbo oil seal) I figured I was good to 200K mi.

Yesterday afternoon pulled onto the freeway going up hill. At ~65 MPH heard a pop from the drive train (assume transmission) and got off at the next exit. Drove a little further off the freeway the car would accelerate to 35 MPH so I figured I would get back on the freeway. It would accelerate to 50 MPH but not with the normal response. Got off and headed the 30 miles home. Drove down and up a large winding canyon most at 20 MPH. Car made it. At the top of the canyon there was a large uphill that is normally driven at 45 MPH, but the car would only do it at 25 MPH. After the canyon the flats were driven at 55 MPH but I could feel the transmission being indecisive. Made it home without a dash light for either engine or transmission.

This problem is unlike most that I read on line as the shifting at the lower gears is smooth. But I do not know how further I can go with it acting this way.

Looking for thoughts? Anyone else experienced this? To the experts out there does this sound like a full transmission replacement? Other things I should be looking for as part of the diagnosis?

If it is time for a new tranny, does anyone know if the upgrade valve bodies are the same used on the 03-07 models?

Look forward to getting the family vehicle back on the road.

From your description I'm not even sure it's the transmission. Have you checked the charged air hoses? You may have blown one, the short hose from the turbo to the plastic charged air pipe is particularly prone to failure.

sjonnie, thanks for the quick reply/idea.

I just pulled the charge air hose. Both the short and the long hoses do not appear to have cracks the penenetrate through to the inner layer, but probably need to be replaced... Will order up in the AM.

I just put my scanner on the car and pulled a P1238 "Turbo Control Valve" so your theory was sound. Will look into this more and keep you and the forum posted on what I learn. Any guidance is always appreciated.

    SJonnie is usually right...

But to your question on the valve bodies, there were several different changes during each model year...so, no, you can't use an '03. You can't even use a different '01 valve body in your '01...

You're best off having yours rebuilt, if that's in your future...

Today was a very good day! A little bit more digging and the problem was found: The Charge air pipe had popped off the ETM. The crazy thing is the clamp was still tight around the pipe, but obviously not tight enough.

sjonnie, I owe you a steak! (guess I can afford it given I will not have to order a transmission:-)

None the less, I ordered up the Silicone charge air hoses, as mine are showing their age and an IPD Heavy Duty Turbo Control Valve (though I was tempted to follow the DIY posts)

I am having trouble with acceleration... like my turbo is not kicking in. I am wondering if I have a similar problem.. those air hoses. Can anyone point me to a picture so I know what I am looking for? I have done a lot to this 2001 xc70 I have but I have not had to deal with the turbo yet.

    thanks
