Define "off-road" for me...I used to live in Vermont, where dirt roads were common...that's the sweet spot for this car, a bit of extra ground clearance and AWD make it ideal.
But "off-road" is where there are no roads, and there are rocks, ledges, streams, etc...that environment requires a transfer case with a low range to crawl over large objects/steep drops/ledges. Even if you gain the ground clearance, you can't crawl this thing without overheating the trans...and if you don't need to crawl it...you're on a dirt road...and the Volvo with Geolanders is a good set-up.
But if you're really talking off-road, really off road - well, I would go with a 4WD, locked transfer and diffs, low range and some better tires, like BFG All-Terrain TA KOs...with a few scratches in the finish so you don't mind what happens to it...
