Default 2004 XC70 Brake - Cliper Spring Photo Needed

    Hi Guys
Did me brakes over the weekend and I think I did not place the caliper spring in the right place. The brake pedal is to soft, so if someone could send me a photo for the right position of the caliper spring it would be appreciated.

The spring is just to stop the pads rattling and shoudln't have a noticable effect on the brake feel.

Are sure you didn't let any air into the system?

NO - the spring is NOT just for anti-rattle.

It applies tension to the pads to hold them in the correct position - install it wrong, and as this poster has found out, the pistons retract too far into the caliper after each application and bingo - NO BRAKES. If the pedal is going half way to the floor with good hydraulics (no air in them) then you've got the spring on wrong.

This picture is of an S-40, but the caliper is the same...to get the spring back on correctly is relatively tough, requires some stretching with pliers...

I second what Astro said... I had the same experience and it was pretty scary when it first happened!

I thought the arrangement was a little odd when I fitted all the new kit and this isn't helping! Guess I'll keep an eye out for some r brakes.

I doubt however the piston is retracting too far, rather it's the spring that keeps the whole assembly under tension in the correct position on the sliders when the piston retracts.

I certainly noticed it brings everything into alignment when fitted correctly. They're worryingly loose without the spring fitted.

Thanks Astro14's for the photo. I did place the spring the in wrong place.
I repositioned the spring in the correct position and it fixed my problem.

Yeah, you also have to make sure you dont bend the clip the wrong way. The place where i bought my S60 from had someone do new rotors and pads all around. Last week i had the worst rattle going over bumps. Got it on my uncles lift, and the guy that put it on bent it, so the pad was loose, causing it to rattle.

Thought of you guys as I rotated tires on the T-5 this evening.

Here are a couple of pics, one front, one rear, showing the spring installed.

Incidentally, I have 35,000 miles on these brakes - there is more than 70% pad thickness remaining and virtually no wear on the rotors. If you are replacing pads - go ceramic...

    Astro is indeed a professional.

He left the calipers rusty as it's nothing to do with functions.
But actually the brakes are neat. The brake/wheel contact surface is extremely clean since it is so important for securing the rim and eliminating any vibration. And this is for safety.

From the photo I finally find out one thing he is not good at: Taking pictures.
Sorry, for the spring, the focus is not correct, .

Everybody have a nice day !
