Best oil filter wrench ever!

Just did my 1st oil change on the 02 xc70. Canister cover was stuck on and I bought a "wrap style" filter wrench. It consists of a nylon strap attached to a square metal post. It worked flawlessly on the v70 the very 1st try. Tightened back up quickly too!

good to know, I've had good luck with a pliers type wrench, you just have to be careful to not exert to much squeeze on the volvos filter housing

The best wrench for the canister filter is the factory or IPD wrench.

I've got strap wrenches like the one you show for the M-B...they work OK, but can slip.

The IPD wrench has zero chance of slippage or damage. You can even put a torque wrench on it to get the housing on correctly. If you're going to change the oil on your car, spend the $$ on a correctly fitting wrench. Price has gone up since I bought mine, but here is the link:

I have this one from IPD, it has a proper socket on it for the ratchet, works like a charm.

I can see how the ipd/Volvo socket would be a little easier to use but it went so quickly for me with the strap style I see no reason to change at this point. We'll see in another 5,000 miles. Thanks for the info and advice and for helping make this site a great resource. I'm actually excited about replacing my front strut mount soon!!

I just did my first oil change. Couldn't find my pliers style wrench and the one single sized wrench I have didn't fit. So, I used a channel locks, worked like a charm. I'm sure the Swedish engineering gods will be smiting from on high but hey, job's done. I looked here to try and find the correct size so I could buy the $5.99 version from the LAPS rather than tithe to Volvo. Looks like a strap tool will work and that's great! Tools are heavy and a pain to move...single application tools are a burden.

If the canister isn't over tightened you should realistically be able to remove the thing by hand. That's the case with most standard filters anyway. Only time I need to use a tool is if a garage did the previous oil change.

The IPD wrench not only has a proper hex on it to accept a socket, it has a 1/2 inch square hole to accept 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar directly...No socket needed...

I cracked the oil filter housing using a strap wrench, creating an oil leak. The cap-style wrench that goes on the end of the housing is much better. I bought the IPD oil change kit and the cap wrench it came with works very nicely.
