    Default No Oil Pressure

2001 XC70, 118K miles. I was acclerating from a corner this afternoon and looked down and the oil light was on as well as the message "NO Oil Pressure shut off car safely." This car has had blow off valve issure in the lat 15K miles that were fixed. What is the most common cause of this trouble code? Could it be head gasket or turbo related? Where do I start?

If you don't know, have a qualified VOLVO mechanic look for it
This is not something you want to hunt and peck over

No VOLVO mechanics in my province. Closest one is 350Kms away. Just wanted to get an idea where to start. I am actaully a qualified Aircraft Mechanic with a background in auto mechanics. Thanks for the help.

Drive this thing with no oil pressure and you frag the engine and turbo.

Two reasons the light comes on: 1. you have no oil pressure. 2. the pressure sensor (sender) failed.

No/low oil pressure will happen if you a: run it low on oil (pump sucks air from the sump) or b: the pick-up screen is plugged up with sludge/carbon or c: the oil pump itself failed or d: the engine bearings are so worn that the pump can't maintain pressure.

First, check the level on the dipstick - you may simply be out of oil (do you check it at every fill-up like you should?)...if no oil on the dipstick, fill to the right level, start the engine and see if the light/warning goes out.

If the level was good, have it towed (don't run the engine with no pressure!). and have a mechanic check the oil pressure with a known good gauge. The sender is easy to find on this engine.

If you're lucky, he will find good pressure with his gauge because it's the sender. If not, the oil pan comes off and you have to check/replace the pick-up and pump. If it was operated for more than a few seconds with that message on because the pressure was actually low, then you may be looking at a new engine anyway...

Thanks for info, It's actually my mother's car so I'm not sure how oftern they check the oil. I do know that it is serviced every 5K and they run synthetic oil. It is close to it's scheduled service but I'll check a few of the things (Oil)out after work. I have a good autometer pressure gauge sitting in the shop. I'll put it on and have a look. I'll be will They are away for a few weeks So I have time to look into it.
