Default Clunking Noise When Engaging Reverse or Drive

    Hello,

I have a 2004 XC70 with 77K Miles and it is making a clunking or lounding clinking noise noise when i engage either reverse or drive (reverse being louder ususally). The noise sounds like it is coming from the passenger front. I thinking it might be a CV joint but am looking for help. The first winter i drove the car it would make a consistent loud clicking noise while i was driving - i had the drive shaft and CV joints look at and i replaced one CV joint at that time. I have read other threads regarding the replacement of drive shafts - what are the "tell tale" signs of CV joints versus drive shaft replacement.

    Appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Scott.

My car was at the dealership for more than a week for this nd also another engine noise, after many hours of diagnostics, this turned out to be from within the transmission, nothing dangerous they said and was not covered by my extended warranty (now expired) to replace a tranny so i live with it. they also glued teh spindles but didnt help much, all mounts are new etc...

The older they become, the more they can clunk.
    Some don't, most do

I had a similar problem (clicking) that was solved by installing XC90 axle bolts. If you too are experiencing this so-called 'axle ping,' the bolts will solve the problem and cost you less than $80 to buy from a dealer. Do a search on here and you'll find the thread where it's discussed. I can dig out the part number for the bolts if you need.

    Canuk,

What Alberta delaer did you take your xc to? i only ask because the Edmonton Dealer is excellent and telling me what my car should have fixed rather than what i took it into have looked at. There was one visit where they told me i needed new wheel bearings - i had them replaced (front & rear) 2 weeks earlier at a local volvo specialist......

    Sargent,
I'm also in Edmonton, and I assume the local specialist you're referring to is Sandy Land. To be honest, I haven't had any bad experiences with Volvo of Edmonton. Although, it wasn't them who suggested the axle bolt fix for my car, it was actually JRL.

In regard to the axle bolt subject, does anyone know what the differences are between the XC90 bolts and the standard XC70 bolts? And how does that alter the clunking problem? Worth changing as a preventative measure?

I apologize if these details are already out there, but a search did not produce any revealing results.

    Thanks,

    Hi Canuk,

So, The Edmonton Dealer did the work. That's good to know. Atleast they will know what i am referring to when i go there. As for the specialist shop...not Sandy Lane but Repsonse Automotive. By far the best volvo guy in Town. I havn't had great experience at Sandy Lane either. I am only going to the Dealer because they owe me some free work after scratching my paint when i had the rear spoiler installed.

    Thanks for the input.

You don't need them to install the axle bolts. It literally takes less than 1 minute to install both bolts. You don't even have to take the wheels off. Just use a suction cup to pull off the plastic caps in the middle of the wheel.
I've never heard of Response Auto - where are they? I've used Sandy Lane for years and Karl's place before that.
