Default Best place to buy lock cylinder.

    Hello,
The ignition lock on my 1998 XC I starting to go. I called the dealer and they wanted $275 for it (keyed the same as the one I have now.) Has anybody found a better source? I could live with it keyed differently if the price was right. Also, are there any other parts that I should replace while I am in there such as the ignition switch?

    Thanks for your help!
    Thanks!

you could get a used one and then make sure you have that key for it .

also the vin incase you ever need another key , if you were tight for money .

but the hassel to remove and repalce ehhh not really worth it .

That dealership no longer ships parts and gives deals to the Volvo online community.

Just got mine in from Tasca Ford Volvo in Cranston, RI. $209 including shipping from their internet/mail order. Recommend you call them vs doing it online, as you will have to give them your VIN number. Also you need to know whether or not you have an engine immobilizer. 98s don't, 99s and later do. Received mine in exactly one week after order. Part is shipped in from Europe. Came with a "stub" key - basically the metal part of the key, but missing the plastic fob on the end.

Waiting for a little warmer weather to do the install. In the meantime, I've been leaving a key in the installed failing lock cylinder. Has been starting every time since I started doing this. Previously, I was getting the dreaded key freewheeling just about every time the key had been removed and was then reinserted, especially after the steering wheel lock tab engaged.

Don't know how well it will work yet, but found a 90 degree right angle drill drive adapter at Home Depot for 20 bucks which should make it easier to get access to drill out the shear bolts.

If you have an immobilizer, apparently you will still need to go to a Volvo dealer to have the key programmed to match the car's security system. Not sure how this works but thankfully I don't have to deal with it in my 98.
