I have been looking at purchasing a 2006 XC90, after a deal for a 2006 xc70 fell through. I really like the interior room of the XC90. However, the T5 XC90s that I have looked at have significant oil sludge on the filler cap and the neck into which the oil is added - it looks like mud and you cannot even see through the neck. These were 2006s with approximately 50k KM. The oil dipstick also had deposits on it. I walked away. On the other hand, a used six cylinder XC90 had no signs of any sludge. One dealer told me that most of the XC90 T5s have the oil sludge problem. I have also seen it on pre-2008 XC70s, though some have no signs of it.
My question - is this a problem with the XC90 T5s and XC70s with the same engine and does it affect the engine long term? Is there a design flaw in the engine? It can't be related to just short drives, because the six cylinder ones don't have any sign of sludge.
Thanks for your input.
